High Speed rail is an issue which may have profound effects on Austrey village life in the coming decades. Although the current proposals for HS2 stop south of the village, a less publicised branch is likely to follow the M42 corridor from Birmingham to Nottingham - coming very close to the village (see map on village notice board).
Austrey parish council oppose the current plans for HS2.
Several public meetings have been held in the area as a result of a local Action Group being formed to oppose the HS2 proposal. Cllr Beryl Grix believes, as do the majority of the council, that the benefits for such a project would be dubious for the majority of people in Britain. She has therefore been trying to inform more people about this issue.
The local action group on this issue is the Polesworth & District Action Group Against HS2 & The Y Route group. If you oppose the plans for high speed rail and feel that you can lend support in any way it would be appreciated.
The public consultation on HS2 (which also covers compensation for future expansion) is now closed. Results are expected from the Secretary of State for Transport before the end of the year.
Our MP, Dan Byles, is also opposed to the plans and has good content on his web page explaining the reasons why - http://www.danbyles.co.uk/conservatives/ If you can let Dan Byles MP know how you feel that will also be useful as he will have a measure of public feeling from which to debate.
He can be contacted by email: dan.byles.mp@parliament.uk or telephone constituency office : 02476 315 233.
