Open
Gardens this year was held on the weekend of 11th & 12th of
July. Saturday was overcast and dull with a few showers which seemed to
keep the visitors away. Sunday, however was much better, with over 200
people enjoying the gardens on view. Sixteen gardens were open this year
and the comments from the visitors was very encouraging. Refreshments
were served in several gardens with Pimms, BBQ, strawberries & cream and
a chocolate fountain on offer. Total figure for the money collected is
just under £2000.00. Well done everybody. Special thanks to ACG for
donating the BBQ food. Please click on the link below to see more photos of Austrey's Gardens.

Calor Competition Result We tried our very best but on the day we were beaten for the title of Calor Regional Village of the Year. The competition was very competitive, but the overall winner is Hathersage in Derbyshire. However we still have a chance of winning one of the five regional categories that we entered. These will be announced later in the year. Our presentation in the Village Hall was stunning, with all the societies and clubs putting on a remarkable display. Many thanks to all who made this event a success. Special thanks to the Calor Competition organisers for all their hard work in the planning.

A big day
for Austrey in the Calor Competition Judges and representatives of Calor came to see and discuss the village over a 2 hour period. All residents should be proud of the displays and presentations held in the village hall by village organisations. In addition the Judges visited our village shop, school and playing field/allotments finishing back at the hall for a scene from the Vicar of Wobbly Bottom followed by a question and answer session. The standard of displays and mini presentations were excellent. It would be hard to imagine them forgetting Austrey in a hurry! |

Chuckles from a
packed Village Hall!
The arrival of the Vicar of Wobbly Bottom meant another success for the WI. "Excellent", "the best yet" were some of the comments from the audience. There was the usual banter between the audience and actresses all the way through which the photos are unable to catch. See WI for photos and more information. |

| October 2008 | The
Village Hall now belongs to Austrey! The ownership of the village hall has now been transferred to the Austrey Old School Hall Trust. More information can be found on the Village Hall pages. It’s taken forty years or more, but October 10th 2008 finally became the date on which the transfer of the ownership of the Old School Hall in Austrey was passed from the Diocese of Birmingham to the village. |

Austrey is the Best
Village in Warwickshire - it's official! Not one, not two - but three awards were won by Austrey in this year’s Calor Village of the Year competition. Austrey is the first North Warwickshire village ever to win the award and congratulations have been coming in from across the county. The competition, unlike the Best-kept Village competition, was based on community activities and focuses more on what the village is like as a community, rather than how the village looks. Austrey was singled out for three awards – coming first in the Medium-sized village category, first in the Environment section and finally being awarded the prestigious title of 2008 Village of the Year for the whole of Warwickshire. The judges made special mention of the action this year by the Austrey Community Group in setting up allotments at the |

playing fields, all of which
have been taken up by residents. |
